Power utility Eskom to implement ‘Stage 1’ rotational blackouts

JOHANNESBURG, March 14 – State owned electricity company Eskom said on Thursday it would implement “Stage 1” rotational powercuts from 11 am to 11 pm due to a shortage of capacity.

Stage 1 requires 1,000 MW to be rotationally loadshed nationally at a given period to protect the power system from a total collapse or blackout.

“We continue to appeal to residents and businesses to use electricity sparingly during this period,” said Eskom, which was forced to effect similar rolling powercuts for several days last month after some of its generation units failed. (ANA)
