North West police urge public not to share fake social media posts about foreigners September 10, 2019 0 1804 Share on Facebook Tweet on Twitter FILE PHOTO: SAPS (Twitter) RUSTENBURG, September 10 – Police in North West province have urged the public not to shake what they called fake claims on social media that foreigners would be attacked. The call comes in the wake of recent attacks on mainly African migrants in Johannesburg and Pretoria. “There is a voice note doing the rounds on social media platforms that foreign nationals especially Nigerians in Matlosana and the vicinity will be attacked,” spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said. “Police in the province would like to state it that the message is reckless and incites violence. As a result, the police urge members of the community to ignore the message, not to share it further and to use social media platforms responsibly. The public is further requested to work together with the police to expose and bring to book all those who are conspiring to commit criminal acts.” In Rustenburg a message went viral, suggesting that people should stay away from work on Wednesday because foreigners would be attacked, a day before a planned peaceful march by the taxi industry. The Bojanala1 Regional Taxi Council, under the banner of the SA National Taxi Council (Santaco), issued a notice that it would stage a peaceful march on September 12 to hand over a memorandum to the Rustenburg municipality. About 500 minibus taxis were expected to participate in the march from 8am to 1.30pm and the council appealed to motorists to avoid roads on its route. – African News Agency (ANA)
