SINGAPORE, April 14 – The Blitzbokke produced a superb second-half performance to outplay defending champions Fiji 20-19 in the final of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens tournament in Singapore on Sunday.
The odds were heavily stacked against the Blitzbokke who found themselves 19-0 down at halftime after the Islanders ran in tries by Aminiasi Tuimaba, Napolioni Bolaca and Vilimoni Botitu.
Just as the Fijians had found their spark in the first half, the second period belonged to the South Africans.
Two touchdowns within a minute by Kurt-Lee Arendse and Angelo Davids – who was named as the Player of the Final – plus a try by Ryan Oosthuizen got the South Africans back into the match.
A conversion and the deal breaker – a 14th-minute penalty – penalty by Selvyn Davids, got the South Africans over the finish line as the clock ran down. (ANA)
