JOHANNESBURG, May 10 – Support for the governing African National Congress dipped below 50 percent in Gauteng province, with nearly 60 percent of votes tallied as counting continued on Friday after Wednesday’s national elections.
Just after 11 am, the ANC was sitting on 49.52 percent of the votes in Gauteng, followed by the main opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) with just above 28 percent.
The ANC won 53.59 percent of the Gauteng vote at the previous national elections in 2014, while the DA had 30.78 percent.
The latest tally on Friday showed the Economic Freedom fighters garnering 13.94 percent so far in Gauteng, compared with a final showing of 10.3 percent five years ago, when it was still a newcomer on the political scene.
