Ramphele and son in assault row

JOHANNESBURG- Former Agang leader Dr Mamphela Ramphele and her son Hlumelo Biko are under investigation for allegedly assaulting Biko’s wife.

Highly placed sources have confirmed to Africa News24-7 that the pair is under investigation and were expected to be in court on Thursday.

According to a highly placed source who chose to at this time to remain anonymous, the incident happened in the early hours of New Year’s Day. According to information in our possession, around 3 am on New Year, there was a commotion between the two and Biko wanted his wedding ring from wife Sindiswa Magqaza.

“Mr Biko assaulted Ms Magqaza in full view and with passive assistance of Dr Ramphele,” said the source.

Magqaza was said to have been asked to leave the place where they were all having celebrations to usher in the new year and she went back to her hotel. The assault happened in Camps Bay, Western Cape. A high ranking police source said a case was opened at Camps Bay Police Station. The officer added that a J88 form was received from the doctor depicting her injuries.

“The investigating officer has arranged with the two suspects namely Hlumelo Biko and Mamphela Ramphele come to his office and will be charged and taken to court,” said the officer.

He is the son of Ramphele and the late Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko. He got married to Magqaza in 2016. He was formerly married to Moroccan Leila Akahloun.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed that a case had been opened but declined to divulge any other information. He failed to respond to all questions sent to him to establish if the pair has been arrested or when they would be appearing in court.

“This office can confirm that a 27-year-old complainant opened a case of assault against her husband. The case is under investigation by Camps Bay SAPS. Investigations continue,” said van Wyk.

He further confirmed that the case would be heard court on Thursday (04/01/2018).
