JOHANNESBURG- Police in Giyani, Limpopo have dismantled a bank following gang which has been terrorising residents since last year and has accumulated over R3 million from the robberies.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said residents in the Giyani area have been subjected to a reign of terror by a group of criminals who were targeting them from different banks within the Giyani CBD.
“Victims were often followed after withdrawing money from the banks in the area and when arriving at their homes, these criminals would then pounce on them and rob them of cash at gunpoint,” said Ngoepe.
Following many reported incidents which have been taking place since October 2017 with similar modus operandi, a dedicated team of Police Detectives led by Colonel Chris Mabasa was established and the initial investigations ensued.
“These investigations were up and running around the clock until this breakthrough was made on the 2018-01-06 when two suspects aged between 25 and 31 were arrested during a robbery in progress next to one of the banks in the Giyani CBD. In all the case dockets which were opened, the consolidated cash amount of money robbed from the individual members of the community is R3.7 million and more cases are still being reported which will increase this amount,” he said.
During the arrest, two unlicensed firearms were recovered. Ngoepe has appealed to anyone who may have been a victim of the syndicate to approach the Giyani Police Station or the nearest Police Station. People can also contact Colonel Chris Mabasa on 082 469 0739.
The arrested suspects were expected to appear before the Giyani Magistrate Court today (Monday) for a series of armed and house robberies and possession of unlicensed firearms.
