Africa News24-7 reporter Ayanda Mdluli who is at the airport said he heard a blast that sounded like a bomb went off. When entered the arrivals section at the airport, he found the entire street cordoned off.
“There were a lot of security and police officers who were desperately trying to get people out before the explosion went off. 10 minutes later, a huge blast went off near terminal A which sent scores of people into a panic. Currently, airport crew and police officers are mum on what has transpired,” Mdluli said.
A police source speaking on condition of anonymity said it was not a bomb blast but a police simulation. The source said there was a communique that was circulated the previous day warning of the exercises.
He said police were testing their abilities to react to emergency situations such as a hostage-taking situation.
